About The Book: In this extensive four-volume work, the Pahlavi language takes center stage, as it offers a comprehensive Pahlavi, Gujarati, and English dictionary. Pahlavi, an ancient Persian tongue, bears the imprint of Semitic languages due to the influence of various Semitic rulers during different historical periods in Persia. To gain a deep understanding of Pahlavi, one must possess proficiency in Avesta, Sanskrit, Pázand, Persian, Arabic, and some Semitic languages. The Pahlavi script, adapted from Avesta, presents its own set of challenges with unique pronunciations and abbreviated characters. Its grammar is notably complex, replete with numerous conjugations, diverse parts of speech, affixes, prepositions, and conjunctions. About The Author: Jamaspji Dastur Minocheherji Jamasp Asana (1830-1898) was born in Bombay in 1830. He was a Parsi priest and Iranologist. He came from a priestly Bhagaria lineage in Gujarat and, during the 19th century, engaged in a competition for priestly prominence with the Sanjana family in Bombay. His extensive knowledge of Zoroastrian language and literature was fostered by the support of Sir Jamsetji Jijibhoy. Notably, he stirred controversy as a high priest due to his involvement in contentious initiations in 1882. Dastur Jamaspji held prestigious positions, overseeing the consecration of fire temples across India, including the Anjuman Atash Bahram Temple in Bombay. He possessed a substantial collection of Zoroastrian manuscripts and made significant contributions to Pahlavi philology. Jamaspji also had associations with Western scholars and received honorary doctorates. He passed away in Bombay in 1898. Additionally, his "Pahlavi, Gujarâti and English Dictionary" spanning four volumes was published in London from 1877 to 1886.
